Marković

Biography

Velimir A. Marković, full professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, was born on November 13, 1959 in Zemun, in Belgrade. He finished primary and secondary school in Belgrade. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in 1985.

He was approved to specialize in General Surgery in 1988, and passed the specialist exam in 1992 with excellent results before the commission: prof. Dr. Aleksandar Karadžić, prof. Dr. Branislav Dragićević, prof. Dr. Vladimir Arsov.

In 1987/88, he enrolled in postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade, Department of the Digestive System.

He defended his master's thesis entitled: "Construction and functional result of the ileal reservoir in the treatment of ulcerative colitis" in 1999, and his doctoral dissertation entitled "The significance of the colonic J reservoir for improving emptying function and quality of life in patients operated on for rectal cancer" in 2008. 

As a student, in 1983 he started volunteering at the Second Surgical Clinic of the University of Belgrade in Belgrade. After a mandatory medical internship at the "Boris Kidrič" Hospital, from June 1986 to November 1987, he volunteered as a clinical doctor at the Second Surgical Clinic of the University Hospital in Belgrade.

In November 1987, he was accepted as a permanent employee at the Institute for Diseases of the Digestive System, at the Clinic for Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery, and in March 1988, he transferred to the First Surgical Department, where he still works as a surgeon, head of the eighth department and director of the First Surgical Department.

In 1999, he was elected to the position of assistant at the Department of Surgery with Anesthesiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and is now a full professor at the Department of Surgery with Anesthesiology.

He trained in the field of Colorectal Surgery, in one of the world's most famous hospitals in that area, in St. Marks Hospital in London, from the field of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy in Mainheim and Ludwigshafen (Germany), from the field of surgery for advanced malignant diseases of the pelvic organs in Manchester (England) at Christie Hospital as a fellow of the ECCP (European Council of Coloprotology) participated in many courses, educations, professional meetings and congresses in Europe and the world.

The reputation and professional knowledge was confirmed by the election as the director of the Clinic for Digestive Surgery, First Surgical Clinic, KCS, on October 1, 2015.

He is a member of numerous domestic and foreign associations: SLD, Association of Surgeons of Yugoslavia, Surgical Section of SLD, Member of NUPENS - National Association for Clinical Nutrition of Serbia. World Association of University Colorectal Surgeons (since 1998), Association of Mediterranean Society of Coloproctology (since 1999), European Association of Coloproctology (since 2002), Central European Club of Coloproctology (since 2003), Member ESCP (since 2006 ), UOC UHCIBS (Association for Chronic Intestinal Inflammatory Diseases of Serbia) (since 2011), Association of Surgeons of the Republic of Srpska (since 2010), Founding Member of UAHS (since 2013), Member of the Scientific Society of Serbia (since 2018), Medical Academy of SLD (since 2019), World Association of University Colorectal Surgeons (since 1998), Association of Mediterranean Society of Coloproctology (since 1999), European Association of Coloproctology (since 2002), Central European Club of Coloproctology (since 2003) .

National representative for Serbia, EACP - European Association of Coloproctology (2005).

National representative for Serbia, ESCP - European Society of Coloproctology (2006).

He is one of the founders (1998) of the Association of Coloproctologists of Yugoslavia (DKJ), and now the general secretary and member of the presidency.

For over twenty years (from 1992 to 2016), he worked in the third department of the First Surgical Clinic in the team of prof. Dr. Zoran Krivokapić. Participated in the introduction of over twenty new surgical procedures in colorectal surgery. He is now the head of the eighth department of the First Surgical Department.

He is the author and co-author of more than 70 papers published in domestic and international journals. He is one of the co-authors of the book Emergency and War Surgery, published in 1998 and the book: "Surgery for Medical Students" Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, published in 2009, as well as the editor of the monograph "Stoma", published in 2007 and nine more chapters in monographs, books and practicums.

As a researcher and collaborator, he participated and participates in six international and five domestic scientific projects.

He gave more than 40 invited lectures at national and international congresses and professional meetings.

Participated in numerous professional meetings in the country and abroad, presented more than a hundred professional lectures and papers.

Member of the commission and mentor/commentator of many diploma theses, doctorates and narrow specializations.

He organized and was one of the organizers of more than 30 international and domestic congresses, symposiums, meetings and educational courses.

He was the organizer or one of the organizers of the Eighth Congress of Surgeons of Yugoslavia in 1994 in Belgrade.

First and Second International Symposium of Coloproctologists of Yugoslavia in 1998. and 2000, President of the organizing committee of the third (2002), fourth (2004), fifth (2006), sixth International Symposium of Coloproctologists of Yugoslavia (2008), seventh (2010), eighth (2012), ninth (2014), tenth (2016), eleventh (2018) as well as the ninth Central European Congress of Coloproctologists (2004).

Organized 11 professional meetings for doctors, nurses and technicians from 2003 to 2017 on Kopaonik.

He is the winner of numerous awards, among which we can single out: Award of the City of Belgrade (2014) for the textbook "Surgery" (editor Prof. Dr. Živan Maksimović), Award of the City of Belgrade (2012) for the monograph "Rectal Cancer" (editor Prof. Dr. Zoran Krivokapić , where he is the author of two chapters), Plaque of the Serbian Medical Society (2014), Charter of the Serbian Medical Society, Čačak branch (Charter for exceptional personal and professional cooperation with doctors of Čačak surgery (2016) and Charter of the Serbian Medical Society (2019).
