Stadium "Rajko Mitić"

Our club's stadium is located in Ljutice Bogdana street at number 1a. The magnificent sports facility, one of the largest in the Balkans, is a witness to decades of success and victories of Red Star.

The official name of our stadium since December 2014 is the "Rajko Mitić" Stadium, after the first Red Star. Previously, the official name of the stadium was "Stadion FK Crvena Zvezda ". Many fans simply call it "Maracana", and you will find out why in the following text.

The field with stands, originally built in 1927 on the site of our stadium today, belonged to FK Yugoslavia, and its appearance was appropriate for that time. The stands were wooden, spectators mostly stood at matches, and the capacity was 20,000 standing seats.

During World War II, FK Yugoslavia was closed down, and with the establishment of FK Crvena Zvezda On March 4, 1945, the stadium of the former FC Yugoslavia, where today's "Marakana" is located, was ceded to our club. Crvena Zvezda played its last match at the old stadium on December 27, 1959. The team from Novi Sad was the rival in the farewell to the dilapidated playing field.

A part of football history also went with it. On that pitch, Moša Marjanović scored a goal for Zamora, Planička was defeated, and after World War II, many beautiful and exciting matches were played.

After the farewell match, the stadium was demolished and a new, modern sports facility was built on its foundations. Previously, in order to reach the surface of the new field - 12 meters lower than the previous one, over 350,000 cubic meters of earth and 15,000 cubic meters of stone had to be removed. In addition to its magnificent appearance, the stadium also received exceptional grass on the playing field at that time, with drainage and all the layers necessary for the "life" of a grass field.

The gates of the new "football temple" were officially opened for the first time on September 1, 1963, at a match played by Zvezda played against Rijeka (2:1), and that match was attended by 55 thousand spectators, and the record was set that autumn in the derby with Partizan, when there were 74 thousand souls in the stands.

The following year, when the construction of the stadium was completely completed, the capacity was a whopping 110 thousand spectators! Due to its grandeur and large capacity, fans rightly compared the stadium to the then largest in the world - "Maracana" in Rio de Janeiro. From those days to this day, that name has remained an integral part of the story of Red Star, and our beloved stadium has become synonymous with success and victories!

The first goal at Zvezda's "Maraкana" was scored by Trifun Mihajlović, in the meeting between the pioneers of Crvena zvezda and Jedinstvo from Zemun, the preliminaries of the championship match with Rijeka. The first official, first league goal was the work of Vukoj from Rijeka, while the first goal for the senior team of Crvena zvezda was scored by Dušan Maravić, in the same game.

That the "Marakana" stadium is a true football temple is best confirmed by the fact from 1975, when 96.070 souls gathered there for the match that Zvezda played against the Hungarian Ferencvaros on April 23, within the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup (2:2). According to official data, there were so many spectators with purchased tickets, but it is estimated that on that April night, 110 thousand spectators were present at our "Marakana", which was the capacity of the stadium at that time.

Following the modernization of football facilities and respecting the rigorous requirements of UEFA, with the aim of greater comfort and safety for the fans, today that number has been significantly reduced and by installing chairs on all four stands, the capacity of the stadium has been reduced to 51.755 seats.
