State Champions 1991.

The year 1991 was written in golden letters in the history of Red Star, but also of Yugoslav football. That was when Red Star triumphed in the European Champions Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, becoming the champion of Europe and the world, which is the greatest success our football has ever achieved! Of course, Crvena Zvezda was also the champion of Yugoslavia.

- Red Star was just missing one European title. Now that we have won it, I guess everyone who says: our club is the best in the history of Yugoslav football is right - said the then director of Red Star, Dragan Džajić.

The Red and Whites defended their championship title with a dominant performance and "ahead of schedule". In the 32nd match of that championship - with a convincing victory against Osijek (5:1) - Crvena Zvezda secured its 19th title with four matches remaining in the competition. In the former Yugoslavia, the following are far behind in terms of the number of championship crowns: Partizan (11), Hajduk (7), Dinamo (4), Vojvodina (2), Sarajevo (2) and Željezničar (1).

Coach: Ljupko Petrovic.

When it was announced that Crvena Zvezda hired Ljupko Petrovic as the coach of the first team, there were those who were wondering: is this the right expert for Red Star? Everything, however, turned out to be better. The new coach not only fit perfectly into the complicated Red Star midfield, but also quickly proved his qualities. The players accepted him as a first-class expert, which he confirmed by choosing the best tactics for the final match of the European Champions Cup, when the French Olympique from Marseille was defeated on penalties in Bari.

The Red Star players had, in fact, only two poor results during the spring. The first was a defeat at home to Proleter (1:2), while the second was a failure in the domestic cup final against Hajduk at the JNA stadium. The defeat to Proleter in the fight for points was the first in the championship at Marakana since September 1987, when Rijeka defeated our team as a guest 3:2. Darko Pančev was the top scorer of the championship for the third time, and the second time in the Red Star jersey (once in Vardar), with 34 goals. He also won the "Golden Boot" as the best European scorer, and surpassed the record of Slobodan Santrac, who scored 33 goals for OFK Belgrade in the 1972/73 championship.

- Records were not our primary goals. We wanted to finish the season at the level of the best Yugoslav, but now also European club. In this way, we satisfied our fans, whom we care about very much - emphasized Dragan Dzajic.

The final result of the table best shows the extent of the dominance of our most trophy-winning club in the early nineties: Crvena Zvezda 54, Dinamo 44, Partizan 41, Borac (Banja Luka), Proleter 35, Hajduk, Vojvodina 33...
