In the 1956/57 season, when Crvena Zvezda was the best in Yugoslavia for the fifth time, a new rival appeared in the football arena – Vojvodina, just as dangerous, combative and ready for the biggest clashes. Nobody paid attention to the team from Novi Sad at that time, because Zvezda was busy with Hajduk Split, with whom it exchanged the lead until the eighth round. The decisive battle, that autumn, was seen in the ninth round, when Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, convincingly defeated Hajduk 3:0, narrowly missing out on two points and remaining in first place until the end of the championship.
A serious contender for first place was Vojvodina, which defeated Dinamo Zagreb (3:1) in the last round of the autumn part of the championship, and Crvena Zvezda lost to Lokomotiva 1:0 on their home field. Despite the unexpected defeat, Zvezda retained first place with 24 points, but only one point more than the first runner-up from Novi Sad.

In the rest of the championship, Vojvodina followed Red Star, and the championship derby was played in Novi Sad. Rudinski gave Red Star the lead in the 66th minute, but ten minutes later Vukelic equalized the score. However, three minutes before the end of the match, Ivan Popovic brought a great victory to our team. Then the Gordian knot was finally cut and it was clear to everyone who would be the champion. Crvena Zvezda theoretically secured the title three rounds before the end, and at the end of the championship its balance was as follows: 26-17-5-4, 66:23, 39.
