Crvena Zvezda defended the Yugoslav Cup trophy in 1996, and in a truly convincing manner in both final matches against Partizan. First, the black and whites were crushed at Marakana on May 8, in front of 25,000 spectators, with a score of 3:0 (scorers were Jovicic in the 8th, Krupnikovic in the 37th and Zivkovic in the 51st minute), and then the red and whites outclassed them as guests – 3:1 (scorers for our team were P. Stankovic in the 45th, Krupnikovic in the 65th and D. Stankovic in the 79th minute).
Crvena Zvezda had previously eliminated Novi Pazar, Radnicki from New Belgrade, Loznica and Novi Sad. Nebojša Krupniković was in the form of his life: nine matches - seven goals.
