A year before the greatest success in the history of Yugoslav football, Red Star's triumph in the European Champions Cup, our most decorated club won a new Yugoslav Cup winner's trophy. It was the last celebration in our most massive competition in the former common state, which soon fell apart. At the JNA stadium on May 19, in front of 24,000 spectators, Crvena Zvezda defeated Hajduk Split 1:0 in the final. The winning goal was scored by Darko Pančev in the 12th minute.
Crvena Zvezda has previously eliminated Liria, Vojvodina, Buducnost and Partizan. Three convincing victories were also recorded - Liria (8:2), Vojvodina (6:0), Buducnost (5:1), which was defeated 3:0 in the second leg in Podgorica. The top scorer was Darko Pančev, who scored eight goals in eight matches.
