The Yugoslav Cup was defended in 1949, defeating the team Naša krila from Zemun in the final – 3:2. The match was played at the packed JNA stadium in front of 50,000 spectators.
The scorers for Red Star were Ognjanov in the 17th minute, Takač in the 76th minute and Tomašević in the 87th minute. Previously Crvena Zvezda eliminated Sarajevo's Željezničar, Zagreb's Metalac, Pancevo's Dinamo, Zagreb's Milicier and Partizan in the semifinals. Captain Rajko Mitić scored the same number of goals in six matches, while Kosta Tomašević scored one less.
