The Maracana has always been a place where opponents were speechless and walked onto the field in fear. Many stories have been told, but most of them are related to the famous tunnel, which has been a symbol of the club for decades now.
The way from the dressing rooms, which are located behind the north stand of the "Rajko Mitić" stadium, to the main pitch seems ordinary to some, but every player who has ever passed through the tunnel in the moments when the Maracana was filled to the last seat created a memory for a lifetime. The noise and shaking of the tunnel is something that the more experienced players of Crvena zvezda are used to, but even so they feel the extra adrenaline and the obligation to leave their heart on the field for the red and white colors when they run out on the grass.
The opposing players used to say after the games that their legs were "cut off". The tremors felt led some football players to think about an earthquake, and the uncertainty of the unknown and what awaits them when they get out of the tunnel is perhaps the biggest fear they have felt in their careers.
The legendary Red Star footballer who left us too soon - Siniša Mihajlović once evoked memories of the famous tunnel and described why it is so special.
- I will never forget when we had to go out on the field before the match against Dinamo Dresden. We were in the tunnel under the north. I put my hand on the wall to stretch and then felt a strong vibration and shaking of the tunnel. I was talking to Robert Prosinecki, who was standing less than two meters from me, but we couldn't hear each other. I could only see how he opened his mouth, because it was simply an incredible noise - said our Miha.
The match against Dinamo Dresden left a special impression on Mihajlovic.
- When we went out onto the field, I looked timidly under my eye and saw that everything was full. I thought, "Why did I come here?", if someone had offered me to leave the field, if I didn't have to play, I would have run out, said thank you and would never come again. I felt so much fear. It lasted for the first five to ten minutes and then it went away. I've never felt what Marakana and the fans can do anywhere else - emphasized Siniša Mihajlović.
The famous Ali McCoist, the former football player of Scotland and Rangers, still thinks that the famous "Maracana" is a place where he would still get goosebumps today.
- I think it's the scariest place I've ever played or watched football. They ran over us in 1990, when they won the European Cup with Pančević and Prosinečki. It was a real team, but we also had a good team at the time. I still remember walking through that tunnel. It's a very scary place - Ali McCoist said.
After the historic victory over Liverpool, the stopper of our team - Miloš Degenek revealed the impressions of the Liverpool players.
- You can't describe the atmosphere, it's different when you're on the field than when you're watching from the stands. I spoke with James Milner in the tunnel, he told me that it was phenomenal and that they had never experienced anything like this - said Miloš Degenek.
We remind you that the celebration of the 60th birthday of our Maracana is scheduled for Saturday at 8 pm, when the red and white team will meet the Novi Pazar team.
