Red Star footballers found out their rivals in the Champions League and they are: Inter (G), Barcelona (D), Benfica (D), Milan (G), Young Boys (G), PSV (D), Stuttgart (D ), Monaco (G). We have the most matches in history with Barcelona, we had the best time against Young Boys, and for the first time we will meet with Stuttgart.
We will start from the first hat and from the great Inter, with whom we once met in the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup. In 1981, the first match was played in Italy, where Zvezda returned to Belgrade with a positive result, as the match ended - 1:1. However, in Belgrade we suffered a 0:1 defeat and thus ended our European odyssey.
There are few European clubs with whom Zvezda has crossed paths as many times as with Barcelona, given that we have as many as nine games behind us. The first was played way back in 1962 in the semi-finals of the Cup of Fair Cities when we lost 0:2 at Maracana, and then 4:1 in Spain. Already in the next competitive year, we returned the favor, considering that we eliminated them in the round of 16 of the Cup of Fair Cities. Then we won 3:2 at home, suffered a 1:0 away defeat, but then in the "majstorica" we went on with a triumph with a minimal score. We were eliminated by Barcelona in the Cup Winners' Cup, in the round of 16 for the 1982/83 season. Then we suffered a 2:4 defeat at Maracana, and we also lost in Spain 2:1. The freshest in the memory of the fans is certainly the double match from the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup when Barcelona eliminated us in October 1996 after a 3:1 victory in Spain, and a 1:1 draw at the Maracana.
We only met Benfica twice, and it was the double leg of the round of 16 of the European Champions Cup, when we won 3:2 at our stadium, and then suffered a 2:0 defeat in Portugal.
The paths of Red Star and Milan are often intertwined... It all started in 1988 when Milan eliminated us after penalty kicks after both games ended 1:1, and after the return match with Zvezda leading was interrupted due to fog. The match was repeated and ended 1:1. In the Champions League qualifiers, in the summer of 2006, Milan, who then won the elite competition, eliminated us after winning 1:0 in Italy and then 1:2 in Belgrade. The most recent memory dates back to February 2021, when we were eliminated from Milan due to the away goal rule. Then it was 2:2 at Maracana (empty), and 1:1 in Italy, and that famous rule is no longer in force.
Although Young Boys today are seen as a debtor to Zvezda for last season, given that last season we were defeated 1:2 by them in the group stage in Belgrade, only to draw 2:2 in Switzerland, even though we were a much better rival, the impression is that we had the most success against the Swiss team throughout Europe. We also eliminated them in 2004 (2:2 in Switzerland and 3:0 in Belgrade), as well as in 2019 (2:2 in Switzerland, 1:1 in Belgrade).
As for the PSV team, we met them in August 2004 and won at the Maracana with 3:2, only to lose in Eindhoven with 5:0 and complete the qualification for the Champions League.
Monaco is also a very fresh memory, given that we were in the same group in the Europa League. It was the fall of 2022, and we experienced two defeats - 0:1 in Belgrade and 4:1 in the Principality.
We still have the first match with Stuttgart...
