The Red Star footballers were close to winning the UEFA Cup in the 1978/1979 season, and how great and powerful that generation was is shown by the fact that the leaders were Vladimir Petrović Pižon and Dušan Dule Savić, and that the famous Arsenal fell in the anthology match on Highbury.

It seemed that we would end the competition already in the first round of the UEFA Cup, because we suffered a defeat against Dynamo Berlin on the road with a score of 5:2. The rematch in Belgrade brought a real miracle, because the visitors took a 0:1 lead, which was followed by a complete turnaround and a fantastic game by our club. Savić tied the score, Zdravko Borovnica scored, and with two goals, the epithet of the player of the match went to Miloš Šestić, who brought 90,000 fans to their feet in the finish.

In the second round, it was a bit easier, considering that in Spain we beat Gijon with a score of 0:1, but there would still be some tension in the second leg. Namely, the Spaniards took an early lead, but Pijon equalized the score in the 80th minute and brought great joy to our fans.

The third round and the famous double match with Arsenal, which is still talked about today and is often mentioned in cult domestic films. We won from Belgrade with a minimum score after Cvijetin Blagojević's goal. Everything was ready for the rematch in London, all the eyes of world football were focused on that meeting. Arsenal opened the game better and took the lead in the 69th minute through Sunderland, and it looked like we would go into extra time. And then came the iconic line: "Milosavljević played a pass for Pižon, Pižon passed the ball to Blagojević, Blagojević crossed - Dule Savić scored." It was a goal in the 87th minute and Zvezda's ticket to the next round of the competition.

Against another English giant, Savić was a hero, given that he scored a goal in Belgrade for 1:0 against VBA, and then scored in the second leg, for the then 1:1 in England. Zvezda came just two steps away from achieving the goal.

He defeated Savić and Hertha in Belgrade in front of 95,000 spectators, and went to Berlin with a 1:0 victory. Nevertheless, the home team quickly reached 2:0, as it stood on the scoreboard in the 18th minute, but once again the enormous character of this Zvezda generation came to the fore. It was the 74th minute when Pižon assisted Šestić for the final 2:1, after which Zvezda advanced due to the away goal rule.

As well as that, another rule that is no longer in force, which was valid at the time, was that two games were played in the final. The rival was Borussia Mechengladbach, and in Belgrade we quickly went 1:0 with a goal by Sestic after a pass by Muslin, although the guests managed to equalize the score and then everything stopped in 90 minutes in Germany. Unfortunately, the rival celebrated with a score of 1:0, after the referee, after a suspicious situation in the 18th minute, pointed to the penalty spot and thus prevented this famous Zvezda generation from being crowned with the European trophy.
