On this day, exactly 62 years ago, on November 13, 1962, Crvena Zvezda defeated Rapid from Vienna 1:0, in the second leg of the first round of the Fair Cities Cup.
That double match is special because it is the first competitive meeting between the two teams. The first duel of this interesting double match was played on October 10, 1962 in Vienna. Numerous world-class footballers played for the red and whites, who later became legends of the Red Star.
When the French referee - Jean Tricot, marked the end of the game, the scoreboard read 1:1. For the Austrian team, the goal was scored by Rudi Flegel in the 48th minute, while the equalizer for Red Star, to the joy of our fans, was brought by the great Bora Kostić. As a result of his goal, the Red and Whites returned to Belgrade with an "active" result in their pocket.
The return match was played a little more than a month after the first match, that is, on November 13, 1962, exactly 62 years ago. With great support from the stands, the Red and Whites entered the aforementioned duel motivated.
Milorad Pavić brought the following 11 players to the field in the second leg: Mirko Stojanović, Milan Cop, Tomislav Milićević, Novak Tomić, Svetozar Andrejić, Bora Kostić, Luka Malešev, Vojislav Melić, Vladimir Popović, Radet Ognjanović and Josip Skoblar. Justice in this match was shared by Carlo Gambarotta from Italy.
The first half ended without goals, however, Red Star was "carried" by the roar from the stands in the second part of the match and managed to secure a place in the next stage. Vojislav Melić scored the winning goal in the 55th minute of the game, and his goal turned out to be the only one in that match. Crvena zvezda won the doubleheader, with a total score of 2:1, and qualified for the second round of the Cup of Fair Cities, in which they later met with Barcelona.
