Red Star footballers will know their rivals in the new season of the Champions League, the most prestigious club competition in the world, on Thursday from 18:00 after the draw in Monaco, which will be a kind of prelude to the anthology matches that await us during the fall and which, we believe, will be remembered for a long time.
Throughout history, Zvezda has been considered a respectable participant in the Champions League, as evidenced by statistical data where our club played 151 games, recorded 70 wins with 33 draws and 48 losses. There is no doubt that the 1990/91 season is the one that places our club among the immortal European greats when we climbed to the roof of Europe in Bari with a triumph over Olympique Marseille after a better performance of penalties. The impression is that almost everything is known about that season among the Zvezda players, from the famous "Mihajlović to the middle" when Augenthaler beat his own goalkeeper at the Maracana, and the characteristic run of Darko Pančev after the penalty kick with which Zvezda won the competition, to the anthological two-matches with Dinamo Dresden and Glasgow Rangers.
However, it was not the only year when Zvezda was the cause of concern for everyone in Europe, considering that we played in the semi-finals on three occasions, and even in the quarter-finals of the Champions League or the European Champions Cup, as the competition was originally called, five times. The most convincing victories are still: Didelange (9:1, 1957/58) and Linfield (8:0, 1969/70)...
If we talk about recent history, it may not be more convincing, but it is certainly the biggest victory - Liverpool. The famous November evening and two moments when Milan Pavkov wrote his name in red and white history in golden letters by knocking down the future European and world champion with fantastic goals. It's not a victory, but it's a passage on - Salzburg, Pavkov's famous entry on the field, Krstičić's protective attitude and cooperation between Degenek and Ben, and the first Champions League for Zvezda since 1992.
Zvezda's best scorer in the history of the Champions League is still Bora Kostić with 17 goals, while Milan Borjan (39) has the most appearances, although he is closely followed by Milan Rodić (36) who, if he plays four matches this season, will manage to overtake him.
