In the 2019/20 season, Crvena Zvezda played a double-header against Young Boys in the playoffs for placement in the group stage of the Champions League, from which they emerged victorious and secured participation in the highest quality European competition for the second consecutive year.

In the 2018/19 season, the red and whites achieved historic success when they started the fight for the Champions League in the first round of qualification, and reached the group stage after two unforgettable games against Salzburg. Only a year later, the same time was waiting for Zvezda, which managed to repeat its success and in the last round of qualification outwit the Swiss representative - Young Boys.

After the exciting penalty series against Copenhagen, the first team of our club was only one step away from the Champions League. The first game against Young Boys was played in Bern, and Vladan Milojević's team won a draw (2:2) and left an excellent impression before the rematch in Belgrade.

In the match that was played on August 21, 2019, Degenek and Garcia entered the list of scorers. Already in the seventh minute, Young Boys took the lead through Asale. Great joy was brought to our team by Degenek after only 11 minutes, when after a corner kick by Marin, he was the highest in the jump and sent a "candle" into the Young Boys goal, thus neutralizing the deficit. At the beginning of the second part of the game, García entered the list of goalscorers for a complete turnaround of the red and whites. The Swiss equalized in the 76th minute when a penalty kick was awarded to Young Boys after the intervention of VAR, and the final score was 2:2.

The rematch was played six days later, on August 27, to be exact, when the fans filled the stands of the "Rajko Mitić" stadium to the last seat, and the interest of the star players was so great that many were left without a ticket in front of the popular Maracana.

In an unprecedented atmosphere, as was the case in Bern, Vladan Milojević's men drew (1:1) against the Young Boys team, but due to the away goal rule, which was still in force at the time, they advanced to the group stage of the Champions League .

Our team took the lead in the 59th minute when a phenomenal counterattack by Crvena zvezda was crowned with a goal by Aleksa Vukanović, who brought the red and whites one step closer to achieving their goal. Red Star footballers had the advantage until the 81st minute, when our team unfortunately conceded a goal. Nevertheless, the dramatic match in Belgrade had a happy ending, and after the referee's whistle, there was a celebration that is still recounted to this day.
