Red Star was defeated 1:2 by Leipzig in the fourth round of the group stage of the Champions League, but it was the jubilee 40th match in the elite competition for Milan Rodić, who thus entered the history of our club in golden letters.
There is no doubt that Rodić is synonymous with Zvezda's successes in recent history, given that he is by far the longest-serving footballer in our club. In July 2017, he signed the contract, and for the seventh season he represents one of the most important players in our team. Once more agile and scattered on the left sideline, today he is more reliable, firmer, somewhat closer to the stopper position, but what Rodić brings with his authority on and off the field can be widely discussed.
The performance against Leipzig was the 40th in the Champions League (including the qualifiers) for Rodić, who left behind Milan Borjan with 39 games. It is interesting that in third place is another current first team member of our club, Miloš Degenek with 29 appearances. He has two assists on his account, which he recorded against Kairat, as well as Young Boys, who are our next rivals in the Champions League. Maybe it's time for the first child right then?
As things stand, another big anniversary awaits Rodić in December, considering that he currently has 293 games in the red and white jersey, and that it is very possible that by the end of the calendar year he will reach the number that would distinguish him as one of of the most special stars in the 21st century.
