That our stadium is an impregnable fortress was confirmed by the duel from 1996, when Kaiserslautern was a guest in Belgrade. After a minimal defeat in Germany, Zvezda convincingly defeated the aforementioned team with four goals in the net.
In the first game, the German team celebrated with Wegman's goal in the 59th minute. Since they didn't concede a goal, Kaiserslautern started the second leg with a lot of optimism and certainty that they were very close to further placement, but our players didn't think so and believed in a turnaround.
A packed Maracana welcomed the second duel between these two teams, and there were as many as 60,000 fans in the stands. The incredible atmosphere was the scene of one of Red Star's most convincing European triumphs.
The first half did not live up to the expectations of the large audience, while the red and whites tried to create a chance to score, the Germans sovereignly guarded the advantage gained in their stadium. However, at the beginning of the second part of the game, everything changed, and the fans were not aware that they would witness the goal of their favorites.
The 55th minute of the game was played, when Zoran Jovicic sent in Dejan Stanković, who shot on the ground from the edge of the penalty area and scored to equalize the total score. The second goal was awaited until overtime. The 97th minute was in progress, and after a deduction in the penalty area, Stanković placed the ball on his right foot again, and with a volley he brought a turnaround for his team, i.e. a 2:0 lead at the Maracana.
From that moment, there was only one team on the field, which was confirmed by Zoran Njeguš with a fantastic goal in the 107th minute. Everything was done by the Zvezda footballer himself, and he beat the indisposed Reinke from more than 20 meters. The final outcome of the match was set by Miodrag Pantelić after a counterattack in the last moments of the game.
