Crvena zvezda was within reach of the European spring in the 2005/06 season, when after an incredible match with Strasbourg and a 2:2 draw, we ended the competition in the group stage of the UEFA Cup.
Then in group E of the UEFA Cup, our Red Star met with Basel, Troms, Roma and Strasbourg. The propositions of the competition were such that the teams play only one duel with the teams from the group, while the home team is determined by lot.
In the first game of the group stage, our team was defeated by Basel at Maracana with 1:2, and then suffered another negative result in Norway. This was followed by the famous victory over the Italian Roma at Maracana, when they only triumphed with 3:1 on the wings of Nikola Žigić. In the last round, we had a visit to Strasbourg waiting for us to go through.
Walter Zenga's team played excellent football, which we confirmed at the match played at the "Stadium de la Meno" in front of slightly more than 13 thousand spectators. Our boys took the lead in the 34th minute through the agile Dusan Basta, who ran down the right side and routinely hit the far corner of the goal for 0:1. In the continuation of the game, we witnessed the mastery of Ardijan Đokaj in the 63rd minute, when the winger doubled the score on the scoreboard with a beautiful lob shot.
However, in the last 15 minutes of the duel, we failed to maintain the advantage. With two goals by Kevin Gameiro, in the 78th and 94th minutes, Strasbourg tied the game at 2:2. In this way, Red Star remained in fourth position in the group, while Strasbourg, Roma and Basel secured the knockout stage.
