On this day in 1991 Crvena zvezda played one of those games that will live forever in the hearts and minds of our fans. It was the famous European Cup Semi Final Second Leg against FC Bayern München.
After a 2-1 win in Munich the stage was set for a dramatic match in Belgrade, but few could predict just how dramatic the game would be.
It started well with Siniša Mihajlović scoring from a long-range free kick. It was 3-1 on aggregate with Crvena zvezda had chances to extend the lead.
But the German giants wouldn't give up and they scored twice in space of just five minutes with Klaus Augenthaler and Manfred Bender leveling the score midway through the second half. We were level.
There were chances for Jupp Heynckes’ team, but Ljupko Petrović and his players somehow held on as the tie headed towards extra time.
But then one of most iconic goals was scored in injury time. Siniša Mihajlović crossed from the left, Klaus Augenthaler attempted to clear, but he sliced the ball that flew over goalkeeper Raimond Aumann and into the net to send the packed stadium into frenzy.
The match never restarted and delighted fans invaded the pitch in wild celebrations that marked Crvena zvezda’s passage to the final.
The names of the players who went on to lift the European Cup by beating Olympique de Marseille in the final will forever be remembered among the red-and-whites: Stevan Stojanović, Duško Radinović, Slobodan Marović, Refik Šabanadžović, Miodrag Belodedić, Vladimir Jugović, Robert Prosinečki, Siniša Mihajlović, Darko Pančev, Dejan Savićević and Dragiša Binić.
