Season 1990/91 was a remarkable one for the club. And it was the away game to FC Bayern that showed the world Crvena zvezda mean business.
European Cup semifinal draw pitted the Belgrade club against the Bavarian giants with the first leg played on this day in 1991 at the famous Olympiastadion in Munich.
It was always going to be a difficult match and it certainly looked even harder as the hosts took the lead on 23 minutes through Roland Wohlfarth.
But Ljupko Petrović’s side showed great skill and determination and were level just before halftime after a devastating counter-attack. Dragiša Binić was released by Robert Prosinečki and the speedy winger found the onrushing Darko Pančev to delight the traveling fans.
Second half brought some more magic from our talented forwards. Darko Pančev and Dejan Savićević working well together before the latter beat Raimond Aumann with a classy finish and set Crvena zvezda on their way to the final.
Still, there was the second leg in Belgrade to come. But surely, there wouldn’t be too much drama…
