In any "marathon" championship, and in the season 1955/1956, the championship lasted 22 weeks, constant preparation is the most powerful weapon. During this season, Crvena zvezda became the champion of Yugoslavia for the third time, and constant preparation was even then the biggest feature of our team. In the autumn session, Crvena zvezda scored 20 of 26 points. In the spring the same score, and that was enough for winning the first place. None of Crvena zvezda's rivals had the strength to endure this grueling race to the end. Crvena zvezda and Partizan had 20 points, and Radnički a point less half way into the championship...
The start was hectic. Changes were frequent in the lead, and Crvena zvezda got to the first place for the first time in the third round, and they remained in the lead at the end of the autumn session of the championship. Crvena zvezda and Partizan alternated at the top during the spring 1956, but the turning point came in the nineteenth round. Crvena zvezda and Vojvodina ended the match in a tie in Novi Sad (1:1), while in Sarajevo Željezničar beat Partizan 1-0. That’s when Crvena zvezda took the first place and they no longer left it. From round to round, Partizan had fewer chances and towards the end of the season they were out of the race for the championship title. The outcome of the championship was practically familiar three rounds before the end. The champion Crvena zvezda’s balance at the end of the season was as follows - 26 16 8 2 62:29 40
The first two Crvena zvezda’s big stars played for the team during that season - Rajko Mitić and Dragoslav Šekularac, and besides the standard goal keeper Krivokuća, the great goalie Vladimir Beara also defended for the champions’ team that year.
