The first football Championship of Serbia as an independent state was held in the season 2006/2007, and the Champion was Red Star. Our most successful club got the trophy at the neighboring Partizan stadium, following the third victory our coach Boško Đurovski gained against the black and white team in less than two months. With the 25th Champion Crown title won, and historically the first in Serbian Championships, Red Star ended the 130th Championship “eternal derby” the best possible way.
Before barely 13.000 spectators at the stadium in Humska Street (the most devoted Partizan fans were boycotting the game), the scorer for the home team was Rukavina 50 minutes into the game, and Red Star goals were scored by Burzanović (after 19 minutes) and Milijaš (penalty shot, after 66 minutes)
- It’s nice to be on the Red Star team and to be the Champion of Serbia. Partizan had their chances and future lies ahead of that team. They play very nice football, but if you defeat a team three times in a month, all the arguments are on your side – stated Boško Đurovski.
The red and white team joy and celebration for having become Champions were increased by the awareness of all the problems the management of the club, the coaching staff and the players had to face after sudden, unexpected and unequaled abandonment of the team by the coach Dušan Bajević in the middle of the match against Vojvodina at Marakana, when, due to bad result, the unhappy fans asked for him to leave. And to everybody’s surprise Bajević left and didn’t come back. The team was taken over by his assistant Boško Đurovski.
Red Star fans, and above all the most fierce ones, Delije, cherish dearly this 25th Champion-star, not just because it was gained after a demonstration of superiority, but also because in the Spring of 2007 a dream came true, the dream of the first Champion of Serbia. This goal was very important for Red Star as well, as it is one of the symbols of Serbia. The title was, basically, won in the twilight of the 5th of May, the night before the Orthodox Serbian Holiday Đurđevdan and it exuded of it!
During the season 2006/2007 Red Star also won the tenth Cup double. Red Star won the Champion trophy three rounds before the end of the season, with 74 points (23 wins, 5 draws and 4 losses) with 55:27 goal difference.
